The House of the Amphitheater owes its name to its proximity to the arena. It was built in the first century and was used for two centuries. It was a large house with rooms opening up to a central courtyard with a well and a fountain. One of the adjacent rooms was the triclinium (the formal dining room), whose mosaic floor depicts the grape harvest and Venus (the goddess of beauty) accompanied by a chubby winged child.
