Izbica - Jewish cemetery (Fabryczna Street)

Jewish cemetery (ul .Fabryczna) - It was established in the second half of the 18th century. On the plan of an irregular pentagon with an area of 0.9 hectares. It is located on the northern edge of Izbica, on a hill, on the road from Krasnystaw to Zamosc. During the occupation, the Germans carried out mass executions on it - until June 1943. They executed a total of at least 4,000 people.They also used some of the tombstones to build a Gestapo detention center in Izbica. Most of the matzevot were already stolen after the war.Three matzevot and fragments of a dozen others, made of sandstone and granite, have been preserved in the tree-lined cemetery.The oldest is dated 1823. After the war, on the initiative of Rev. A monument in memory of the murdered with inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew was erected here by Grzegorz Pawlowski (Jakub Hersz Griner, who was deported from Zamosc to Izbica during the occupation and was ordained a priest after the war) and his brother, Chaim Griner: "For I know that my redeemer lives, and on the last day I will rise from the earth (Job 19.25). Three tombstones were placed near it, symbolically commemorating the victims of mass executions.In 1995. On the initiative of the Leiner family, the ohel of Tzadik Mordechai Yosef Leiner and other family members was rebuilt in the cemetery. In 2005., thanks to the German organization Bildungswerk Stanislaw Hantz, young people and teachers from Izbica Gymnasium, the cemetery was cleaned up and information boards were erected. Currently, the cemetery is cared for by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage, supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German documentary film producer Tvschoenfilm.In September 2006. The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in cooperation with German ARD TV carried out the demolition of the former Gestapo detention center.Several hundred fragments of matzevot were recovered, the oldest of which dates to 1785. They were built into the outer walls of the ohel of Tzadik Yosef Mordechai Leiner, while others are to be built into the planned fence of the cemetery. In November 2006. A monument in the form of a simple stele, with inscriptions in Polish, German and English, commemorating the exterminated Jewish community of Izbica, was unveiled at the cemetery.
