Although the legends tell of the shepherd Bucur who established the city, there are actual documents that tell us otherwise. The first written mention of the town București was made in 1459 and it was issued by the princely court of Vlad III, also called Vlad Dracula, the ruler of the Wallachian Principality at the time. Vlad used the fortress in Bucharest as one of his official residences and the base for some of his attacks against the Ottomans. The writing in this document was made in the Cyrillic alphabet, which remained the official alphabet used on Romanian territory until 1862, when the Latin one was adopted. This document is the basis for measuring the official age of Bucharest, and every year on the 20th of September, the day marked in the paper, there are celebrations all around the city to commemorate its foundation.
