The History of the Jesuit Monastery

In 1627 the Jesuit monastery of French Jesuits was founded in the Castle. However, today’s building housing the Archaeological Museum was erected around 1680. In 1773 the order of the Jesuits was abolished, which was later succeeded in Naxos by the Lazaristes (1782-1878) and later by the Salesians (1891-1927), who functioned the French School of Commerce. The renowned author, Nikos Kazantzakis, studied there (1897-99). Since 1973 the building has operated as an Archaeological Museum. Today, the escutcheons of the Jesuits and the Salesians can be seen at the entrance.
