The Lady of Roumeli

The Holy Monastery of Panagia of Prousos is built at the edge of a canyon, between Mount Kaliakouda and Mount Chelidona. Hidden in the wild landscape of Evrytania, the Monastery of Panagia of Prousos, commonly named Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa, is a place of legends and traditions which attracts a great number of visitors and pilgrims. According to the legends, the Monastery was built at the exact place that Virgin Mary pointed out. Its construction dates back to 829 A.D. when the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Luke the Evangelist, was transferred from Proussa, a city in Asia Minor, to Greece by a young nobleman who wanted to protect it from the anger of iconoclasts. During the German occupation, the monastery became the refuge of the members of the Greek resistance and in 1944 the German forces attempted to burn the entire complex.
